Starting to Move on Skis

First, go on one ski, then learn to turn around successfully!

Most people want to put both skis on immediately. I recommend spending a good few minutes or even half an hour on one. Try gliding first.

Gliding

Put one ski on, right or left foot (both skis can go on either foot.)

Try sliding on one ski while scooting along with the other foot. Push yourself along at first. Then keep your foot off the ground. Balance on the one ski. See how long you can glide for. When this is comfortable, switch and try the ski on the other foot.

Most people who learn to ski don't go on one ski for long. Even when you take beginner ski instruction, you'll do it for only a short time. It gets tiring. But, as an expert skier I regularly practice skiing on one ski. It's a challenge and helps my style. So don't rule it out too quickly. Don't be afraid to go back to it either.

Moving Around on Skis — Clock Motion

Put both skis on. When you first start moving, take it slow! You no longer have the luxury of putting one foot down. You can start by using the clock motion. This means acting as if you are the hands of a clock slowly moving around the 12 hours.

Start on a flat area and imagine your ski tips are pointing at the center of a circle. Do it first facing in.

Take a small step to the left. Keep the tips or front of the skis together, at the center of the clock. Do this by lifting your heel and the back or tail of the left ski. Move it away from your right ski a comfortable distance. Probably about 5 inches. Now lift the right ski and bring it to meet the left. Repeat this until you're facing the other direction and then are around back where you started. Remember to keep the tips together all the time.

After turning around, try it facing outwards. But this time you need to keep the tail or back end of the skis together. br>
