Some Skiing Basics?
Are you a beginner skier? Looking for some skiing basics? There is a lot to get used to. And it can all feel a bit awkward at first. After skiing for most of my life, I learned to snowboard a few years ago. So I know how it feels to be new to a snow sport. Here are a few skiing basicsstep by stepto get you into your ski boots and onto the slopes.
Getting Started with Your Ski Equipment Before you can get on the snow, you need to get your skis and boots on. So let's start at the beginningwith walking in your boots, carrying your skis and putting them on.
Fastening and Walking in Your Ski Boots When you fasten your boots, do it so they are snug, not tight. Use the power strap at the top first, then close the clips. And when you walk in your ski boots, don't do up the top buckles! (more info)
Carrying Your Skis There are a couple of ways to carry your skis. For beginner skiers, it's easiest to just carry the skis under your arm. But once you get used to walking in your boots and handling your skis, there are some better options. (more info)
Getting In and Out of Your Skis Putting skis on and taking them off is a challenge at first. You need to make sure your boots are semi-fastened and that the back of the binding is down. (more info)
Using Your Ski Poles Ski poles help in a variety of ways. But first, it's important to get them the right length and grasp the straps correctly. There are two ways to hold your poles, click here for the right way. (more info)
Getting Started on the Snow After you've figured out your equipment, it's time to start moving.
Moving on Skis When you start moving on your skis, take it slow. First, get used to moving on one ski, picking it up, walking around, even gliding. And get comfortable with both skis by first making a clock. Click here for an illustration. (more info)
Getting Up When you fall (and you will!) there are a couple of ways to get up. If you don't have strong stomach muscles (and there are a few of us out there) it can be tough but here are some different ways to get back on your feet. (more info)
Walking Uphill After sliding a bit on skis, you'll have to get back up the slope. If you're not yet ready to get on a lift, that means walking uphill. There are two ways to walk up a slope. You can side step or you can walk straight up the hill in a V shape. Click here to see an illustration of both. (more info)
Moving On... Once you've mastered these skiing basics, you're ready to start learning the essentials of skiing.
Beginner Ski Instruction The Beginner Ski Instruction page tackles learning how to turn, staying in balance, slowing down and more. (more info)
Using Ski Lifts When you've adjusted to your new ski legs, it's time to hit the beginner slopes. This means getting on your first lift. Check out the Using Ski Lifts page for a description of various ski lifts, plus how to ride them safely. (more info)
