Getting Up after Falling Down

Getting up is easy. Well, easy if you know a few techniques.

When you fall, first give yourself a minute to recover.

Getting up is a learned process especially if you don't have strong stomach muscles.

Using Your Poles

Get your legs so your skis are together, next to each other and so that they are downhill from you.

Now use your poles to push up from the snow. Stick the ends of the poles in the snow uphill from and slightly behind you.

Push yourself forward and up until you are standing. You need to use your stomach muscles. Don't rely only on your arms to push you up. It can take a bit of practice but it will get easier.

Using Your Hands

Put your skis together and downhill from you. Put your hands out in front of yourself, towards the tips of your skis, about 12 inches uphill from the skis. You should be leaning towards the front tips of your skis.

Then, walk your hands towards your body, but keep them in front of you and as you do push yourself up. You will need to use your stomach muscles to pull up into the standing position.

On Your Stomach

For the less flexible or less strong skiers, this technique usually works. Get your stomach on the snow. Skis below you, head up the hill. Lie with your skis apart. They should point in opposite directions, kind of spread eagle.

Push yourself up from the snow. Onto your knees and then the inside edges of your skis. Once standing, balance with your ski poles, your skis will form a V shape. Then bring one ski around to meet the other. You should be standing across the slope.

Last Resort — Take Your Skis Off!

If all else fails take 'em off, stand up and dust yourself off. Then line up your skis across the slope, put your downhill ski on first, then the other and start again.
